What to Expect During Your Mammogram at Rush Memorial Hospital

At Rush Memorial Hospital, we understand that getting a mammogram can feel intimidating, especially if it’s your first time. That’s why we want to walk you through the process, so you know exactly what to expect — from preparation to results.
Before Your Exam: How to Prepare
On the day of your mammogram, please avoid using deodorants, lotions, or powders on your chest or underarms. These products can appear on the images as calcifications, which may require repeat imaging.
During Your Exam: What Happens
Your mammogram will be performed by a female technologist in a private imaging room. You’ll be asked to undress from the waist up and will be provided with a cape for comfort and modesty.
Here’s what happens next:
- The technologist will position your breast for imaging, adjusting the equipment to your height.
- To get a clear image, compression is applied to the breast. While this may cause discomfort, it only lasts about 20 seconds per image.
- The full procedure takes about 20 minutes.
- For 3D/Tomo mammography, the machine will automatically transition into a second phase where it captures images at a 50-degree angle, offering a more detailed view.
- You may feel more discomfort if you’re on your menstrual cycle or have high caffeine intake. If you have breast implants or larger breasts, additional images may be needed to ensure accuracy.
After Your Exam: What Happens Next
Once your mammogram is complete:
- A radiologist will read your exam and send the report to your ordering provider.
- If you didn’t have a provider’s order, your report will be sent to a designated RMH provider.
- You will also receive a letter from the Imaging Department with your results.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to RMH Imaging Department at 765-932-7556.
