Annual GYN Visits Help Protect Women from Cervical Cancer
Many women focus on the health of their families but neglect their own health. If illness keeps them from taking care of others, they are ready to see a healthcare provider. Otherwise, their own health often takes a back seat, particularly when it comes to annual wellness visits.
Annual Well-Woman visits are especially important for early diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer, which kills about 4000 women a year in the US. Well-women visits should be routine for all women aged 21 and over. Cervical Cancer Statistics | CDC
Well-Women Visits may include an annual pelvic exam, particularly if the patient has symptoms or complaints that indicate a possible problem. A Pap smear, which is used to screen for cervical cancer, is not always necessary. In order to determine how often a Pap smear is needed, patients should discuss their risks and desires with their healthcare provider. Testing for the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) should be done whenever a Pap smear is indicated, since HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer.
