Mosquitoes in Rush County Test Positive for West Nile Virus

Applying insect repellent on arm

The Rush County Health Department regularly traps and tests mosquitoes to monitor for diseases. Recent testing has confirmed the presence of West Nile Virus in mosquitoes collected locally. As of August 20, there have been two confirmed human cases of West Nile Virus in Indiana.

About West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. In Indiana, the risk of transmission and mosquito season typically spans from May through October.

Layla McKnight, Infection Preventionist at Rush Memorial Hospital, advises on ways to protect yourself:
  • Avoid bites during peak hours: Mosquitoes that carry disease are most active from dusk to dawn.
  • Use EPA-registered insect repellents.
  • Do not apply repellent to infants under 2 months old.
  • Wear clothing that covers exposed skin.
  • Eliminate standing water: Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing or slow-moving water. To prevent mosquito sites, check and remove water from items like flowerpots, gutters, buckets, and birdbaths around your home. Also, make sure ditches are clear from debris and are draining properly.

Stay safe and help reduce the mosquito population in your area!
