Deborah Hummel Named Indiana’s 2025 Rural Community Star
Over her 30-plus years at Rush Memorial Hospital, Deborah has held many roles, including Chief Nursing Officer, staff RN, and Wellness Services Coordinator. Today, she leads all clinical quality and performance improvement initiatives for the hospital and its clinics. Her leadership has helped shape the hospital’s growth and its ability to meet the evolving needs of the community.
One of the most remarkable moments in her career came when Rush County’s EMS provider announced it would cease operations within 30 days. In response, Deborah spearheaded the creation of a hospital-based, paramedic-level EMS department—established in just 17 days. The new service included two state-approved ambulances and full crews covering 24-hour shifts, ensuring uninterrupted emergency care for the community.
Deborah’s commitment to mental health has also made a lasting impact. Recognizing Rush County’s high suicide rate, she helped form SPARC (Suicide Prevention Across Rush County), a collaborative initiative involving schools, churches, government agencies, and mental health providers. SPARC continues to reduce stigma, raise awareness, and provide vital support to those in need—contributing to a significant drop in the county’s suicide rate.
Her contributions have not gone unnoticed by hospital leadership. Brad Smith, CEO of Rush Memorial Hospital, shared:
“Deb has served Rush Memorial Hospital and the Rush County community with dedication and vision for more than three decades. Her work reflects a deep understanding of rural healthcare and a commitment to building programs that truly serve the people who live here.”
Reflecting on her journey, Deb shared:
“After working in both rural and urban healthcare, I can truly say I prefer the rural environment. I can make a positive impact that reverberates through the lives of those around me… I’m proud of my decision more than three decades ago to remain rural.”
Her recognition as a Rural Community Star highlights a career defined by service, innovation, and a deep commitment to improving healthcare in rural Indiana.
