Delaying or Avoiding Emergency Department Care

Delaying or Avoiding Emergency Department Care

Don’t try to diagnose or treat emergency conditions at home. Since the arrival of Covid-19, emergency rooms across the country have seen an increase in patients who have put off seeking help, even for conditions such as heart attacks and strokes. Some patients have waited so long that they have died or suffered permanent disabilities that could have been avoided.  Other patients have endured unnecessary suffering at home, too afraid to seek emergency care. Seek emergency care if you experience life-threatening conditions such as:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • A heart attack or chest pain
  • Seizures
  • Severe bleeding
  • Loss of consciousness
  • A Head injury
  • Stroke symptoms
